A sleek, stylish kitchen space from @ourkelvinsidecorner
With its liberal use of dark, sumptuous colour, @ourkelvinsidecorner’s kitchen scheme beautifully demonstrates how bold hues can be used to create an inviting setting for entertaining.
We spoke to the couple behind the space to discover how they achieved the scheme using colours from the Paint & Paper Library palette.
What was the inspiration behind your kitchen scheme?
“We have always been drawn to darker colours within our home. We are fortunate enough to have some rooms that have large proportions and the dark colours we have chosen just make things feel a lot cosier in the evenings. In the daytime, this south-facing room is flooded with light, and painting the window and surround in Minim helps bounce the light around too. We aren’t ones to follow a trend and what we choose we look to keep for a long time. The matt black kitchen with the dark wood tones are fairly classic and the off-black of Kohl and muted grey Opus bring some warmth and drama to the room and some intimacy in the evenings.
How did you choose a colour and finish for your kitchen?
“I’ve loved Paint and Paper Library’s colours for some time and use the Instagram page as a source of inspiration. We had long discussed the products with our decorator Jamie @jbdecor_glasgow who suggested Architects’ Eggshell for the woodwork and Architects’ Matt for the walls and ceiling. These finishes have proven to be tough and wipeable, which is great for a kitchen and with our cockapoo Mabel wandering around.

I love the ‘Monochrome’ concept, teaming a series of blacks and whites alongside Paint and Paper Library’s Original Colours. I was seeking some advice from an interior designer friend, Lisa @reddoor_interiors, when she pointed to the pairing we eventually selected on the colour card. I knew it was the right scheme for the room as it was the combination of colours I was initially drawn to. I just may not have been brave enough to go for it without Lisa’s push!”
What is your most-loved feature in your new kitchen?
“We have always had an open plan kitchen and living space in our previous homes, which is something we missed when moving into our current home. Although our new, repositioned kitchen is not open to our main living space, there is still an area for dining on the end of our long kitchen island, which means we can have friends join us when we are cooking – which is a great social space.
“We also love how dramatic the room is due to the paired back blacks on the kitchen units, walls and woodwork, set off with some functional and atmospheric lighting. This room just feels like such a great space to live and entertain in.”

“We will be adding an extension to our home later this year. This will house our master bedroom and en-suite and I’m already planning a colour scheme for here.
This space will not have the ornate cornicing and mouldings that appear elsewhere in our home and it will be a pretty contemporary, zinc-clad structure in response to the blond sandstone of the rest of the house. So it’s proving a little more difficult to decide on a colour scheme that still gives continuity with the rest of our home.
I really love Paint and Paper Library’s BTWN Dog & Wolf and it is very much at the top of my list for the next project, so watch this space.”
